Mark Bonham Carter, Baron Bonham-Carter (born February 11, 1922 , † September 4, 1994 in Bussento ) was an English liberal politician and publicist .

His father was Maurice Bonham Carter and his mother was Violet Asquith , the daughter of British Prime Minister Herbert Henry Asquith . Before the outbreak of World War II , Mark Bonham Carter began studying at Balliol College , Oxford. He interrupted his studies to serve as a soldier in the Grenadier Guards during the war . He got into Italian captivity from which he managed to escape. In 1945 he took up his studies again, only to run in the same year for the then Liberal Party as a candidate in the parliamentary elections in Barnstaple . He was not elected and finished his studies to work for the publisher William Collins & Sons . In 1958 he stood in the then constituency of Torrington in Devon for a by-election to the British House of Commons. Surprisingly, he succeeded in gaining a majority in a constituency that was considered safe for the Conservative Party . In the general parliamentary election next year, however, he lost his seat in parliament again.

Mark Bonham Carter continued to work for Collins Verlag and he was also a director of the Royal Opera House in London from 1958 to 1982 and from 1960 to 1994 a "governor" of the Royal Ballet . From 1966 to 1971 he was Chairman of the Race Relations Board and from 1971 to 1977 the successor organization to the Community Relations Commission . From 1975 to 1980 he was a vice chairman of the BBC . Margaret Thatcher is said to have prevented this is that he was the chairman of the BBC, just as they should have prevented it than before 1986 Baron Bonham-Carter , of Yarnbury in the County of Wiltshire, as a life peer in the British House of Lords was taken . Mark Bonham Carter was the Liberals' foreign policy spokesman there.

Mark Bonham Carter had a stepdaughter and three biological daughters, one of whom is the politician Jane Bonham Carter . The actress Helena Bonham Carter is his niece.
