Mark Graham Clyde (born December 27, 1982 in Limavady ) is a former Northern Irish football player . The center- back made three appearances for Northern Ireland between 2004 and 2005 before retiring from professional sport in February 2007 at the age of just 24 after a series of injuries and a diagnosis of arthritis . More than two years later, he made a comeback on a semi-professional level at sixth-rate club Worcester City .

Athletic career

Clyde went through the youth academy of Wolverhampton Wanderers and was promoted to the professional squad for the 2002/03 season. At the beginning of the same season he played four championship games for the fourth division Kidderminster Harriers during a one-month loan before he came to his first appearances in the second division. The young central defender even prevailed against team captain and veteran Paul Butler at times due to his mellow playing style and played 17 league games in his first professional season, which was crowned with promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs - the decision however took place without Clyde, who suffered from knee problems that later required surgery.

In the first division season 2003/04 Clyde played nine games and at the end of which he received a new four-year contract. Following relegation to the Football League Championship , he was in the first 13 games of the 2004/05 season in the formation of the "Wolves". In addition, the former U-18, U-20 and U-21 selection player played his first A international match for Northern Ireland on September 8, 2004 in the World Cup qualification in a 2-2 draw against Wales , but then he was unlucky initially twisted his ankle during the October international matches and his knee problems returned in February 2005. He missed the entire 2005/06 season after a necessary operation and after a brief comeback in the first three games of the 2006/07 season under new coach Mick McCarthy , his problems continued to throw him back.

On February 8, 2007, Clyde announced the end of his professional career following an in-depth discussion with the Wolverhampton Wanderers physiotherapist and doctor due to his ongoing injury problems and diagnosed arthritis. In the following years he took up a civil profession as a landscape gardener.

In May 2009, Clyde returned to football on a semi-professional basis and joined the sixth division Worcester City , where he played about 50 competitive games in two seasons before he ended his active career in 2011 and finally took over the coaching post at Bridgnorth Town . After the club went bankrupt in 2013, Clyde also accompanied the successor club AFC Bridgnorth the coaching post, before he resigned from this post after a total of five years for family reasons in 2016.
