Special

Flying boat Dornier Do 24

During the battle for East Pomerania in the final phase of the Second World War , thousands of refugees, especially civilians from Kolberg , which was declared a fortress , and children from the camps of the Kinderlandverschickung in Deep and Kamp were evacuated to Rügen from the Kamp Seefliegerhorst of the Wehrmacht's sea emergency teams . Mostly Dornier Do 24 seaplanes of the Sea Emergency Group  81 were used. These aircraft were designed for only 18 occupants and were mostly heavily overloaded.

On March 5, 1945, the Dornier 24 T-3 (serial number 1151) crashed immediately after take-off and sank in the lake, with the four-man crew and 72 children losing their lives. After the heavy overloading of the machine had long been considered the cause of the accident, in 2010 Polish divers discovered bullet points and shrapnel in the wreck that came from Red Army tanks that had broken through the front at Kolberg and shot at machines taking off and landing from the south bank of the lake. The wreck was not recovered and lies to this day (as of May 2018) under a 3 m thick layer of mud on the bottom. At the initiative of the Mayor of Trzebiatów, Zdzisław Matusewicz, the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge (People's Association of German War Graves) has been trying to raise and bury the victims at the German war cemetery in Neumark (Stare Czarnowo) since 2011 .
