Mark Demling (born October 4, 1951 in St. Louis ) is a retired American football player . In the NASL professional league, he played for the San José Earthquakes and the San Diego Sockers in the 1970s . His brother Arthur Demling , called Buzz, was also a professional footballer and also an American national player.

Career

college

Demling grew up in St. Louis , Missouri , where he attended Saint Louis University High School . After high school he attended Saint Louis University , with whose team he became an American college champion in 1970, 1972 and 1973, since he was already a captain. Saint Louis University accepted Demling into its hall of fame in 1999 , and annually awards the Mark Demling Award to the player with the greatest commitment to the team.

Professional football

Of the 1973 newly established San José Earthquakes , Demling was selected in the Entry Draft in first place. He played a total of five seasons in San José , but he missed the 1975 season due to injury. During the 1978 season Demling was transferred to the San Diego Sockers , for which he completed twelve games this season. The following year he came on only a single league game. In 1980 Demling went back to the Earthquakes, where he also only played one game. He ended his career in 1981 after two years with the indoor soccer club San Francisco Fog in the Major Indoor Soccer League .

After the professional career

After his playing career, Demling worked in the textile industry. He was also the manager of a shoe distribution company in Hayward, California . Demling later commented on football games for various TV and radio stations, from 1996 for the MLS club San Jose Clash . From 1999 Demling worked as a football coach in high schools .
