Mark Ella (born June 5, 1959 in Sydney ) is a former Australian rugby union player who played on the position of the connector . Despite his short career, he is considered one of the best Australian players of all time. He was the first Aboriginal man to be appointed captain of an Australian national team in sport. His two brothers Gary and Glen also played rugby and were part of the " Wallabies ", the national team of Australia.

Ella made his debut for Australia against New Zealand on June 21, 1980 as a 21-year-old and scored his first points with a so-called drop goal. In the following games for the Bledisloe Cup , he also set accents with his fast, offensive style of play. In 1982 he was appointed captain for the first time and formed a dangerous duo with David Campese . In his final year as a professional, he handed the captaincy over to Andrew Slack . Australia traveled to Great Britain to play test matches against all British national teams. He succeeded in doing in every game a try , so he led the Wallabies to four commanding victories.

Following this successful tour, Ella surprisingly announced the end of his career at the age of only 25. He subsequently turned down lucrative offers from rugby league clubs . He was awarded the Order of Australia -Medal for his services to sport .
