Mark Lemon

Mark Lemon (born November 30, 1809 in London , † May 23, 1870 in Crawley , West Sussex ) was an English journalist and founder of the magazine " Punch ".

In addition to his journalistic work, Lemon was also successful with his own fiction works. He was able to publish more than 60 operetta librettos , comedies and melodramas in the course of his life. Christmas fairy tales, a few novels and over a hundred songs were also part of his oeuvre.

In 1841 Lemon founded together with his colleague Henry Mayhew and the xylographer Ebenezer Landell's satirical weekly " Punch " and in July of the same year they were able to present the first edition to the public.

Mark Lemon died at home in his Vine Cottage near Crawley, aged over 60 . He found his final resting place in St. Margaret's cemetery in Ifield (near Crawley).

Lemon was a member of the Savage Club in London.
