Mark Maley (born January 26, 1981 in Newcastle upon Tyne ) is a former English football player . The Sunderland defender had to retire at the age of 21 after a teammate accidentally shot him in the eye with an air pistol .

Career

Maley went through the youth division of Sunderland AFC and received his first professional contract in January 1998. His competitive debut in the professional team of the club was the full-back in the first round game of the League Cup on August 18, 1998 against York City . This was also his only season use for the professional team, the rest of the 1998/99 season spent in the reserve team, with which he won the Central League . In the following season, Maley only made one appearance in the league cup, behind the more experienced players Chris Makin , Michael Gray and Darren Holloway , opportunities were rare. After a third League Cup appearance for Sunderland at the beginning of the 2000/01 season followed for Maley in autumn 2000 loan periods at Blackpool FC ( third division ) and Northampton Town ( second division ), where he came to two missions. Still without a chance to use Sunderland in the Premier League , Maley was awarded to York City in September 2001 in the Third Division. The two clubs had agreed on a cooperation in the summer that had previously taken Maley's teammate Michael Proctor to York. The loan was extended to the end of the season in December, but ended prematurely in March 2002 due to an injury to Maleys after 13 league appearances.

The football career of the former captain of the English national school team came to an abrupt end in April 2002 when his team-mate John Oster accidentally shot him in the eye with an air pistol while "fooling around" in his apartment. Maley had to undergo emergency surgery and was unable to continue his career. In 2007, Maley and Oster reached an out of court settlement agreement.
