Mark Rankin Herring (born September 25, 1961 in Johnson City , Tennessee ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). From 2006 to 2014 he sat in the Virginia Senate , where he represented the 33rd District. He has been the Attorney General of Virginia since January 2014 .

Life

Herring studied at the University of Virginia , where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1983 and a Master of Arts in 1986 . He received his Juris Doctor cum laude from the University of Richmond Law School in 1990 . Herring now practiced as a lawyer in Leesburg . He later founded the law firm Herring & Turner, PC. 1992-1999 was the Town Attorney of Lovettsville .

His political career began in 1999 when he was elected to the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors . He was a member of this from 2000 to 2003. He was first elected to the Virginia Senate in 2006. The by-election was necessary to fill the vacant seat of Bill Mims . In the next regular elections in 2007 and 2011 he was able to defend his mandate. In 2013 he won his state's Attorney General election against Republican Mark Obenshain , succeeding Ken Cuccinelli . Herrings party colleague Jennifer Wexton won the by-election to fill his vacant Senate seat .

Herring is married and has two children, a son and a daughter.
