Mark Waer

Mark Jozef Albert Waer (born March 10, 1951 in Leuven ) is a Belgian doctor and professor of immunology . On May 8, 2009 he was elected rector of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and took up this position on August 1, 2009.

Life

Waer completed his medical studies at KULeuven in 1976 with magna cum laude . He specialized in internal medicine , especially nephrology , and received his doctorate in 1983 on the subject of "Immunological effects of fractionated total lymphoid irradiation on the induction of transplantation tolerance and in the treatment of autoimmune disorders" . He then worked as a post-doc at Stanford University until 1985 .

From 1985 to 1992 Waer worked in the Department of Nephrology at KULeuven before he was appointed Professor of Immunology in 1992. Since 1994 he has headed the laboratory for experimental transplantation at KULeuven and was medical director of the university hospital from 1998 to 2005. From 1999 to 2003 he held the post of advisor to the Belgian Minister of Health and from 2003 to 2005 he was Chairman of the Commissie Immunology of the Belgian National Fund for Geneeskundig onderzoek . Since 2005 he has been deputy director of biomedicine at KULeuven and since 2006 chairman of the administrative board of the university clinics at the same university.

Waer has been the rector of KULeuven since August 1, 2009. He was elected to succeed Marc Vervenne on May 8, 2009 , when he prevailed in the second round with 682 votes against the legal scholar Koen Geens , who won 573 votes.

Waer is a member of the Royal Academy of Medicine and co-editor of Transplantation magazine .

He is married and has four children.

Awards

Waer has received several awards for his services to medicine. In 1983 he was awarded both the Fulbright Hays Prize for Medical Research and the NATO Prize for Medical Research. In 1986 he received the award of the Belgian Immunological Association for the best presentation at the Immunology Congress in Toronto and in 1992 the award of the Vereniging voor Kankerbestrijding for his studies on the recurrence of leukemia after a bone marrow transplant . In 1995 he received the award of the European Association for Organ Transplantation for the best oral presentation during the congress in Vienna. From 2004 to 2005 he held the Francqui Chair in Immunobiology and Immunotherapy at the University of Antwerp .
