Mark Wright (born August 1, 1963 in Dorchester , Oxfordshire ) is an English football coach and former football player .

Player career

Wright began his career at Oxford United . In just a few games he recommended himself for Southampton FC , which signed him in 1982. He played there for five years before moving to Derby County in 1987 .

At both clubs Wright proved to be a stable defender and was appointed to the English national team. In 1990 he took part in the World Cup in Italy after a broken leg prevented participation in the 1986 World Cup .

After Derby County's relegation in 1991, Wright wanted to continue playing first-class and went to Liverpool for £ 2.5million . There he became a regular player and won the FA Cup and the League Cup once . From 1991 to 1993 he was the captain of Liverpool FC. In 1998 he ended his playing career at the age of 35.

Coaching career

After initially briefly working for Southport FC in the Nationwide Conference , Wright took his first engagement in the Football League in June 2001 when he took over the then fourth division club Oxford United . In December 2001 he was fired after alleged racist abuse.

However, he quickly found a new job when he took over the relegation candidate Chester City in the Nationwide Conference. Relegation succeeded and they qualified the following year for the promotion playoffs, but failed at Doncaster Rovers . 2002/03 Chester City finished the league as champions and thus rose directly to Football League Two . Wright ended his engagement shortly before the start of the new season, allegedly because of a relationship with a player's wife.

When Peterborough United signed Wright, it was considered a last chance to save his career. Although he managed to place the club at the front, on January 25, 2006, after an internal investigation, he was suspended from his position and dismissed a week later when he failed to appear for a board hearing. Again a racist remark is said to have been made. Wright denies this, but legal proceedings are pending on the case.

A month later, Wright was reinstated at Chester City, initially on a contract that ran until the summer of 2006. He saved the club from relegation and received a new two-year contract. Shortly before the end of the 2006/07 season, however, he was dismissed for lack of success.

In November 2008 Wright received another contract with Chester City.
