Marko Pomerants

Marko Pomerants (born September 24, 1964 in Tamsalu ) is an Estonian politician. He belongs to the conservative party Isamaa ja Res Publica Liit (IRL). From April 9, 2015 to June 12, 2017, Pomerants was Minister of the Environment of the Republic of Estonia .

Life and politics

Marko Pomerants attended school in Tamsalu until 1982. In 1989 he graduated from the University of Tartu with a degree in geology . In 1989/1990 Pomerants was deputy head of the Rakvere City Conservation Office . From 1990 to 1994 he was head of the nature conservation department in the administrative district of Lääne-Virumaa . In 1994/95 he held the position of head of department for environmental protection at the same authority. From 1995 to 2003 Pomerants was District Administrator of the Lääne-Virumaa district.

In 2002 he received his master's degree in public administration . In the same year he joined the Res Publica party .

In 2003, Pomerants was elected to the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) as a member of Res Publica . From April 2003 to April 2005 he was Minister of Social Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Juhan Parts . After leaving the ministerial office, Pomerants was again a member of the Estonian parliament from 2005 to 2009.

After the Social Democrats left the government of Prime Minister Andrus Ansip at the end of May 2009 , Pomerants was appointed Minister of the Interior by President Ilves on June 3 . Pomerants held the office until April 2011.

Since April 9, 2015, Marko Pomerants was in the coalition government of Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas, Estonian Minister of the Environment. He has held the same office since November 23, 2016 in the cabinet of Prime Minister Jüri Ratas . After his removal as minister, he returned to parliament as a member of parliament on June 12, 2017.

Private life

Marko Pomerants is married to Riina Pomerants. The couple have two sons.
