location

The school is located at Marktstrasse 8, with the school premises stretching between Marktstrasse and Weingarten Street to the west. The school building at Weingarten 18 is listed in the Quedlinburg monument register. The Marktstrasse 8 building , which is also a listed building, is located in the schoolyard .

Architecture and history

The listed building was built in 1884 as a fire station in the style of historicism in massive brick construction and, due to its size and massive construction, represented a rather strange building in the historic Quedlinburg old town, which is otherwise characterized by half - timbered buildings. The facade is structured both in terms of color and plastic, the base is representative.

The house was later converted into an upscale girls' school . In the years from 1946 the market school and the Mummental school were run jointly by the Rector Stolze. In 1948/49 grades 1 to 3 were taught in the market school and grades 4 to 8 were taught in the Mummentalschule in Weberstrasse . On September 1, 1949, the market school became independent again. In September 1955, the school in Weberstrasse, which had meanwhile been renamed the Ursula-Goetze-Schule, and the market school were merged again. Grades 1 to 4 were taught in the market school, grades 5 to 8 in Weberstrasse. The school was converted to the Polytechnische Oberschule (POS) and run up to the 10th grade. In the early 1970s, the market school became an independent POS. Today it is operated as a primary school.
