The Markttwiete is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The 90 meter long Markttwiete is located in the center of the old town island, in the Marien Quartier . It begins at the Schüsselbuden opposite the confluence with Braunstraße and runs eastwards, with the Krambuden coming from the north until it ends in front of the renaissance pavilion of the town hall at the Gothic arcades leading to Breite Straße .

The Markttwiete forms the northern edge of the market , but is not recognizable there as a separate street, as it is not separated from the market by different paving or other signs.

history

The street 1330 is mentioned for the first time in a document with the Low German - Latin mixed name Antiquae Cramboden (old shopkeepers ). In 1352 the name was Tenebrosae Cramboden (dark grocer's booths ) and in 1476 De olde Kramboden (old grocer's booths ). 1484, derived from the opposite Braunstraße, Brunstratentwiete is documented.

It is no longer possible to determine when the current name Markttwiete was first used. The second part of this name, the Low German expression Twiete , is derived from the word twee for two and stands for a narrow alley that connects two larger streets.

The historic buildings along the Markttwiete were completely destroyed in the bombing raid in March 1942 . Only the adjoining buildings of the town hall at Ostend were preserved, but are not included in the market price.
