Markus Affolter (born June 3, 1958 in Seeberg ) is a Swiss developmental biologist and professor. He conducts research at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel .

Life

Markus Affolter studied biology at the ETH Zurich and at the Laval University in Québec . Following his doctoral thesis at Laval University, he went to the Biozentrum of the University of Basel as a postdoctoral fellow in 1988 . In Walter Gehring's laboratory , Markus Affolter began his research work with the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. In 2000 he became Assistant Professor and in 2005 Full Professor of Developmental Biology at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel .

Act

Markus Affolter researches the cellular and molecular processes involved in the formation of organs and blood vessel networks in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster and in the zebrafish . Markus Affolter succeeded in documenting the network formation in Drosophila and in the zebrafish with the help of high-resolution microscopy using live imaging examinations. This now makes it possible to better understand the function of molecules in morphogenesis . In addition, his laboratory, in collaboration with the University of Freiburg , Germany, and the University of Lausanne , Switzerland, showed that the morphogen Dpp and the Pentagone feedback controller perform key functions in proportional tissue growth (scaling) in the wing disc of the fruit fly.
