biography

Markus Braun received his musical training at the Zurich Conservatory. In 1974 he obtained the teaching diploma for piano, 1976 the concert diploma for organ, both with Erich Vollenwyder ; Further studies followed: composition with Hans Ulrich Lehmann and choir direction with Karl Scheuber . In 1978 the collaboration with the guest theater in Zurich resulted in tours all over Switzerland. He received new musical impulses at jazz seminars in Boswil with Joe Viera . After various positions as organist and choir director in German-speaking Switzerland, Markus Braun worked as a church musician at the Kreuzkirche in Zurich since 1993 , where, in addition to his position as organist, he also gave regular concerts. He also worked as a piano teacher and director of piano workshops at the Rämibühl Cantonal School in Zurich.

He experimented as a composer and improviser. A long-term collaboration connected him with the percussionist Robert Mark, with whom he repeatedly developed improvisation concepts for organ and percussion. There were compositions for various jazz formations and chamber music, piano, organ and choral works, as well as two performance productions: Voices from the Rainforest based on the book of the same name by Bruno Manser and Walden based on Henry David Thoreau . Several of his works are published by Edition Delatour . In 2006 he was the winner of the Swiss composition competition for the festival song on the occasion of the Swiss Song Festival 2008 in Weinfelden. In 2007 he created the music for Roland Huber's Swiss documentary film: Lötschberg, the included ones for SF1.
