Markus Klauser (born April 4, 1958 in Switzerland ) is a Swiss chess player .

Markus Klauser is a founding member of the chess club in Belp near Bern, founded in 1986 . In Belp he is mainly active as a youth trainer and organizer of youth tournaments. He is also the first team leader at Schwarz-Weiss Bern . With Schwarz-Weiss Bern he won the Swiss Team Cup in 1992 and 1993. He used to play for SK Bern . In Germany he played for the Palatinate club SC Bellheim since 2001 and for Wormser SV since the 2019/20 season . In the youth development of the Swiss Chess Federation he is the representative of the regional coaches.

Twice, in 1983 and 1987, he won the Coupe Suisse, the individual Swiss cup championship. In 1986 he won the Swiss individual championship in Basel . He was Swiss national champion in 1994 in Lenk , 2003 in Olten and 2004 in Interlaken .

Markus Klauser has held the title of International Master since 2004 . He achieved the first IM norm for this when he won the Swiss individual championship in 1986 in Basel, the second IM norm in 1990 at the 2nd tournament in Lenk in Simmental, where he competed against Grandmaster Josef Klinger , the then FIDE champion, among others Claude Landenbergue and IM Heinz Wirthensohn won and the third norm with overachievement at the Swiss individual championship in July 2004 in Samnaun . At this point in time he did not have the necessary Elo rating to receive the title of 2400, but he achieved it in the same year. Its Elo rating as of June 2020 is 2400, its highest to date was 2413 from October 2004 to March 2005.
