Markus Selin (born March 16, 1960 in Nummela, Vihti ) is a Finnish film and television producer , director and screenwriter .

Life

Selin was born in 1960 in Nummela, southern Finland. His parents ran a cinema where Selin worked as a boy. He often went to the cinema with his parents and grandparents. He later wrote film reviews in local newspapers and for youth magazines. From 1982 he attended business school, began importing videos and founded a video rental company in Lohja .

Selin began his career in the film industry in the mid-1980s after meeting Renny Harlin . Selin and Harlin wrote the screenplay for the feature film Born American about three Americans who accidentally crossed the border to the Soviet Union and were captured while on vacation in Finland . After filming 25 minutes, Harlin and Selin ran out of money. With the help of an American producer who viewed the first footage, they were able to continue shooting. They hired Mike Norris for the lead role . Although the film was initially on the index in Finland for glorifying violence in 1986, it opened the way for Selin and Harlin to enter the film industry.

In 1987, Selin founded Funente Oy, with which he imported Nintendo game consoles and games. The company had to file for bankruptcy in 1993 with debts of FIM 42 million .

In the early 1990s, Selin and Renny Harlin founded the film production company Harlin & Selin Productions Oy. Her first project was Gladiaattorit , the Finnish version of the television show American Gladiators , with Selin producing and Harlin directing. Both wrote the scripts for the programs together. In 1995, Selin founded his own film production company Solar Films in Helsinki , which became the leading production company in the country.

Since 2004 Selin has produced numerous film adaptations of Reijo Mäki's novels about the private detective Jussi Valtteri Vares . Also in 2004, Selin produced the film adaptation of the novel Popular Music from Vittula .
