Marlyn Meltzer (born Marlyn Wescoff ; * 1922 ; † December 4, 2008 ) was an American mathematician and computer scientist . She was one of the first programmers for the ENIAC computer .

Life

Meltzer graduated from Temple University in 1942 . She began her first professional activity in the same year at the Moore School of Engineering . Since she was familiar with the operation of adding machines , she first carried out calculations for the weather forecast. From 1943 she was responsible for calculating ballistic trajectories . In addition to her, Kathleen “Kay” McNulty , Betty Jennings , Betty Snyder , Frances Bilas and Ruth Teitelbaum belonged to the “ENIAC women”.

In 1945 she was accepted into the first team to program the new ENIAC computer, an activity which, despite being mentioned in Woman of the ENIAC , did not lead to much recognition for women at the time .

Before the ENIAC was converted to the Aberdeen Proving Ground , she left the team in 1947 and married.

In 1997 she was inducted into the WITI Hall of Fame by the Association Women in Technology International together with the other employees of the first programming team for ENIAC .
