Marmitako , Marmitaco , in Basque also Sorropotún , Marmita or in Cantabria also Marmite is a fish stew prepared with tuna , potatoes , onions , peppers and tomatoes .

origin

The origin of this stew is Basque . It was probably prepared and consumed by the Basque fishermen . The word Marmitako is derived from the Basque marmita ; a marmita is a pot with a lid. This pot was one of the few cooking utensils that the fishermen took with them on board their ship at sea.
