Marshal of the German Democratic Republic was a former Field Marshal approximately corresponding rank in the National People's Army of the GDR .

With the decision of the Council of State of the German Democratic Republic of March 25, 1982 the rank of Marshal of the GDR was introduced. The law gazette says: “(...) The highest military rank in the German Democratic Republic is Marshal of the GDR. The appointment as Marshal of the GDR takes place in a state of defense or for exceptional military achievements by resolution of the Council of State of the German Democratic Republic by its chairman. This decision comes into force on May 1, 1982. "

The rank of Marshal of the GDR was never awarded. Theodor Hoffmann was promoted to the rank of admiral when he was appointed Minister for National Defense in November 1989. He then abolished the ranks of Fleet Admiral and Marshal of the GDR again.
