Landwehr remains in the Marscheider forest

The state forest of Marscheider Wald , with an area of around 4 × 2.5 km, is one of the largest closed forest areas in the east of the city of Wuppertal near the district of Ronsdorf-Linde . It is a popular recreational area with a mixed forest stock rich in plants and fauna , which rises up to almost 310 meters and is traversed by several streams, including the Marscheider Bach and the Herbringhauser Bach .

Two lines of the high medieval Bergische Landwehr , the Elberfelder and the Barmer line, ran through the Marscheider Forest . A section on the Paulsberg between the Marscheider Bach and Herbringhausen that is still preserved today is protected as a ground monument .

In the late Middle Ages the forest was called Olscheid, which was derived from the older name of the Herbringhauser Bach, Olpebach. The current name comes from the Marscheid estate, first mentioned in the 14th century, in the south of the forest area.

The Marscheider Forest has been registered as a forest on all historical maps since 1500, while the surrounding area was almost free of forests for centuries. Is a "from the 1624 Mark order before the Marscheider and Hall Scheider forest" in which a centuries orally transmitted regulation of forest use was written that a primitive form of sustainable represents usage. However, the implementation of the regulation has been undermined over the centuries. The area had been in the possession of the Counts of Berg since the 12th century at the latest , who made it available as common land to the local farms for certain types of use. In the Middle Ages , abundance of forests and wood meant power, so that the rulers had an interest in preserving the forests. On this basis, the market regulations are to be explained, which can be viewed in the broadest sense as medieval environmental law .
