Etymology and history

The hamlet of Herbringhausen

The etymological origin of the old place name Herbringhausen comes from “Haribrahtinghuson” (= “ House of the Heribendet family ”), from which in 1397 “Herbrechinchusen” was derived. The ending -inghausen indicates a settlement in the 9./10. Century by the Borchter close that on the middle Ruhr lived up to Charles Saxon Wars under Saxon stood rule.

Herbringhausen has been registered as part of the Garschagen honors since the 14th century and belonged to the Beyenburg office . In 1457 the place is mentioned as part of the Mosblech court association as an allodial property of the Duke von Berg . Individual goods of the residential area did not belong to the Honschaft , but administratively to the external citizenship of Lennep .

In 1815/16, 167 people lived in the village, 105 of whom belonged to the Garschagen community and 62 to the Lennep citizenship. 1832 Herbringhausen was still part of the Honschaft Garschagen, since the French occupation of Luettringhausen mayor was a member, and the outer citizenship Lennep the mayoralty Lennep . Which according to the statistics and topography of the district of Dusseldorf as a village community designated place had at that time 25 houses (14 to Honschaft and eleven to the outside citizenship), 17 farm buildings (nine and eight) and a public building, school. At that time there were 168 inhabitants (102 and 66), 19 Catholic and 149 Protestant. In the municipality lexicon for the Rhineland province of 1888, 28 houses (18 in Lüttringhausen and ten in Lennep) with 188 inhabitants (131 and 57) are given.

1900 the mayor had at the urging of Richard Gertenbach the band Weaver joined the Hofschaft to a corporation and established a joint factory. This building was used until 1975 and then abandoned.

Until the municipality reform in 1929, Herbringhausen belonged to the city of Lüttringhausen and was then incorporated into Wuppertal.

The one-class elementary school in Herbringhausen, whose origins lie in the 18th century, was dissolved in 1967. The local poet Paul Figge lived in Herbringhausen for many years and wrote local plays, novels and lyrical texts. His main job was as a teacher at the Herbringhaus school.

Herbringhausen has always owned several taverns and two smaller shops with the first public telephones that were frequently used in the village. So the owner of the telephone had to drive to the farmers in the fields more often to deliver important messages. One after the other, the economy and business were given up. According to stories, there were ten pubs around 1960, such as the Hastberger Mühle, which is still open today (also Luckhauser Mühle or Gerds Mühle ).

Clubs and customs

Hahnenköppen 2012

Herbringhausen has been cultivating the Hahnenköppen tradition since 1913 . The rooster king is determined during the Oktoberfest of the men's choir "Niegedacht" Herbringhausen, and there are numerous applicants. This is done with temporary protests by the animal welfare association not with a dummy, but with a real, but previously slaughtered, rooster.

On June 4, 1899, the Herbringhausen volunteer fire brigade was launched and is still active today. The fire company Herbringhausen currently consists of 21 active members and firefighters since 27 January 2018, led by Deniz Önler as fire brigade leader.

The male choir "Niegedacht" Herbringhausen has been in existence since 1896 and in recent years has made a name for itself in addition to its numerous concert appearances, in particular with its carnival events.

There is also the Herbringhausen Citizens' Association, which takes care of local issues.
