The Marshlink Line is a railway line in south east England and runs along the coast from Hastings to Ashford . It is the eastern continuation of the East Coastway Line and forms with it the connection between the Brighton Main Line and the South Eastern Main Line .

history

The construction of the route was planned by the Brighton, Lewes and Hastings Railway , but it was built by the South Eastern Railway , which rivaled the neighboring London, Brighton and South Coast Railway for the route. It was opened to traffic on February 13, 1871. In 1963 the cessation of traffic was checked, in 1979 between Appledore and Ore it was dismantled on a track, with a switch being installed in Rye. In 1935 only the section between Ore and Hastings, including the Hastings Line to London, was electrified .

business

Continuous passenger traffic with stops at all stations between Hastings and Ashford was discontinued in 2005. There are only trains running westward on the East Coastway Line . All stops except Hamstreet, Rye and Appledore are only served irregularly.

Southern is responsible for operations .

future

There are plans to expand the route for Southeastern high-speed trains, which will initially run from London St. Pancras via High Speed One to Ashford International and then via the Marshlink Line to Hastings and on to Bexhill or Eastbourne . Electrification would also be necessary for this project.
