Nitrosomonas europaea is a species of bacteria in the genus Nitrosomonas . It is also known in German as an ammonium bacterium.
The species is 1.1 to 1.8 micrometers in size and ellipsoidal. It has a polar flagellum that cannot be seen with a light microscope. Nitrosomonas europaea rarely forms short chains.
Nitrosomonas europaea oxidizes ammonium and ammonium salts to nitrites . The species is widespread in soil and water, especially in wastewater.
