Betaproteobacteria (also β-Proteobacteria) refers to a class in the phylogenetic system bacteria , which was established on the basis of the base sequence of the ribosomal 16S ribonucleic acid ( 16S rRNA ). The phylum (the strain) Proteobacteria is divided into the five classes Alphaproteobacteria to Epsilonproteobacteria. In the last few years two more classes have been added, the Oligoflexia and the Zetaproteobacteria . All representatives of this strain are gram-negative , although some species also react gram-variable in the Gram test.

The following is a list of some of the orders that belong to the Betaproteobacteria:

as well as numerous isolates that have not yet been classified with certainty.

Important representatives can be found in the genera Neisseria , Simonsiella , Burkholderia , Achromobacter , Alcaligenes , Sphaerotilus , Nitrosomonas , Spirillum , Thiobacillus and Gallionella .
