The Neisseriaceae form the only family of the order Neisseriales within the beta-proteobacteria . They include various species pathogenic to humans. They are named after Albert Neisser (* 1855; † 1916). A well-known example is Neisseria meningitidis , commonly known as meningococci. This bacterium can cause meningitis and blood poisoning when infected .
features
The representatives are coccoid , they occur individually, in pairs or in clusters. Rod-shaped cells are also formed. They have pili and need free oxygen for metabolism ( aerobic ). The cells do not form spores. In cultures they show optimal growth at temperatures between 32 and 36 ° C.
Many species are parasites of warm-blooded animals. Important human pathogens are found in the genus Neisseria .
Systematics
The systematics of this family was subject to some changes due to molecular biological investigations of the gene structures (comparisons of the DNA, 16S rRNA analyzes ). So were u. a. the genera Moraxella , Psychrobacter and Acinetobacter previously assigned to this family were assigned to the Moraxellaceae family created especially for this purpose . The species Branhamella catarrhalis is now carried under the species name Moraxella catarrhalis . Some genera previously listed here, such as Aquaspirillum , Chitinibacter , Chromobacterium , Deefgea , Formivibrio and Iodobacter, are now assigned to the Chromobacteriaceae family , which was also newly created for this purpose and which is now also part of the Neisseriales order.
