Psychrobacter is a genus of gram-negative bacteria. The prefix Psychro- is derived from the Greek adjective psychros and means cold : Types of Psychrobacter grow at extremely low temperatures. To view Psychrobacter cryohalolentis and P. arcticus still growth at -15 ° C.

features

The types of Psychrobacter are rod-shaped or coccoid . They are salt tolerant ( halotolerant ) and still grow in environments with 6.5% NaCl. The oxidase test and the catalase test are positive. Oxygen is required ( aerobic ). The metabolism is chemoheterotrophic .

Locations are u. a. the Antarctic Ocean, sea ice, fish gills and various foods. So was z. B. the species Psychrobacter proteolyticus found in the stomach of Antarctic krill , Psychrobacter glacincola was isolated from Antarctic ice and Psychrobacter pacificensis was found in the deep sea.
