Ferdinand de Marsin (also: Marchin ) (born February 10, 1656 in Liège ; † September 9, 1706 in Turin ) was a French military leader, Marshal of France and diplomat.

He was the son of the Count of Granville Jean Gaspard Ferdinand de Marchin and his wife Marie de Balzac d'Entragues .

career

His father was already in command of the Spanish troops in the Netherlands, but was unable to acquire any wealth. His son joined the army when he was 17. Marsin initially served in Flanders and was wounded in the Battle of Fleurus (1690) . In the Palatinate War of Succession he fought in the Battle of Neer winds (1693) and was present at the siege of Charleroi .

In 1688 he was promoted to Brigadier des armées du Roi and in 1693 to Maréchal de camp . In 1695 he became "Directeur général de la cavalerie" and with a Brevet Lieutenant general .

From 1701 to 1702 he was the French ambassador to Spain. In the War of the Spanish Succession he was in the battle of Luzzara in 1702 . After the Battle of Höchstädt in 1703 he became Marshal of France and successor to Villars . He was initially successful, but in the Battle of Schellenberg the following year he was defeated together with Tallard in the Second Battle of Höchstädt .

In 1706 he was seriously injured in the battle of Turin and was taken prisoner, where he died a short time later.
