The Marstallweg is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 100 meter long Marstallweg is located on the northern tip of the old town island. It begins in front of the castle gate at the castle gate bridge and curves westwards, along the wall of the Marstall , until it leads down a staircase to the Lower Trave , which can still be seen today. The path was redesigned in 2015 as part of the establishment of the European Hanseatic Museum . Since the opening of the European Hanseatic Museum in May 2015, the stairs to the Untertrave have run through the structure of the museum. Due to the structural separation of the castle monastery and confessional, it is also possible to get to Kleine Burgstrasse / Hinter der Burg or from there to Marstallweg.

history

The Marstallweg is a curiosity because on the one hand it is a pure footpath of little importance, but on the other hand it is dedicated as a street and accordingly given its own street name. The reasons for this lie in the history of the path.

The construction of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal in the years 1896–1900 made it necessary to redesign the area around the castle gate. Here the initially nameless path was laid out. In 1934 a monument to Carl Hans Lody was placed in the city wall next to the northern passage of the castle gate at the beginning of the path . At the same time, the footpath was officially named Carl-Hans-Lody-Steg in honor of Lody and was given street rank accordingly.

In 1946 the Lody memorial was removed except for a remaining commemorative plaque; at the same time the path lost its name. However, it was not renamed again, but was renamed and named after the historic stables on whose wall it runs. It bears this name to this day, which is known only to a few Lübeck residents, as it is not marked by a road sign .
