Life

Grave of Seth and Martha Bullock

Martha Eccles Bullock married Seth Bullock in Salt Lake City , Utah, in 1874 .

When Seth left for Deadwood in 1876, she moved with her daughter Margaret to live with her parents in Michigan , as Deadwood was still an uncivilized and dangerous camp of gold diggers and adventurers at that time.

It was only after her husband became a sheriff in town and laws first came into effect that she moved to Deadwood as well. She soon became a leading member of the local women's community and was president of The Round Table Club on several occasions , a women's literary community with the motto: "Dare to be Wise".

In Deadwood, the couple had a daughter (Florence) and a son (Stanley).

After her death in 1939, she was buried in her husband's grave in Mount Moriah Cemetery , Deadwood.

Television series

The character Martha Bullock from the HBO TV series Deadwood is based on the historical figure. For dramaturgical reasons, however, some historical facts have been changed. For example, the real Martha was not the widow of Seth's brother and had no son with him. In the series, the character is portrayed by actress Anna Gunn .
