Seth Bullock was the son of George Bullock, who had served as a major in the British Army. His mother Anna Findley Bullock was a Scottish woman . In 1867, Bullock moved to Helena, Montana , where he sat in the Senate from 1871 to 1872, helping to establish Yellowstone National Park . In 1873 he was elected Sheriff of Lewis and Clark County . Around the same time he met his future business partner and friend Sol Star , with whom he opened a hardware store. A year later, in 1874, he married his childhood sweetheart Martha Eccles in Salt Lake City , Utah .

In August 1876, in connection with the gold rush, Star and Bullock decided to move to Deadwood, South Dakota, to open another hardware store there. His wife Martha Eccles Bullock, however, moved to Michigan with Margaret, their newborn daughter, to live with Martha's parents, since Deadwood , located in Sioux territory , offered little security for the two at the time. In Deadwood, Bullock met gunslinger Wild Bill Hickok , who was murdered shortly after his arrival. That same year, Bullock was elected Deadwood's first sheriff. During his time as sheriff, he met the famous Wyatt Earp , who was then Marshal of Dodge City and in turn applied for the office of Sheriff of Deadwood. After Sheriff Bullock had ensured security and order with the help of his deputies, his wife Martha and their daughter Margaret were able to move to Deadwood.

However, he spent the short period of the war exclusively in a training camp in Louisiana .

In 1905 he was named United States Marshal of South Dakota by Roosevelt . He held this position for the next nine years under a total of three presidents. After Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson also confirmed him in this office.
