Martha Goldstein
Martha Goldstein (née Svendsen ; born June 10, 1919 in Baltimore , Maryland ; † February 14, 2014 in Seattle , Washington ) was an American harpsichordist and pianist whose musical repertoire ranged from the baroque Johann Sebastian Bach to Domenico Scarlatti to the romantic virtuoso Piano literature by Frédéric Chopin , Franz Liszt and Johannes Brahms extended. As a representative of aDue to historical performance practice , she made her recordings mainly on contemporary instruments.
education
Martha Goldstein received her education at the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and at the Juilliard School in New York. Her teachers were James Friskin , Mieczyslaw Munz, Audrey Plitt and Eliza Woods. She won first prize in a Steinway piano competition and later taught herself at the Peabody Conservatory for 20 years.

Martha Goldstein's musical specialty was on the one hand the harpsichord , on which she played works by Johann Sebastian Bach, also in the transcriptions by Ferruccio Busoni , as well as works by Johann Jakob Froberger or Domenico Zipoli , and on the other hand the romantic piano music by Chopin, Liszt and Brahms, which she, as a representative of historical performance practice, performed internationally on original instruments in the 1970s and recorded them on records in order to give an impression of the original sound and playing technique of that time, in the first half of the 19th century.
