Martha Mercader

Martha Mercader (born February 27, 1926 in La Plata , Argentina ; † February 17, 2010 ) was an Argentine writer, journalist, playwright and filmmaker and politician. She is best known for her novel Juanamanuela, mucha mujer about the life of Juana Manuela Gorriti , an Argentine writer of the 19th century, of which over 100,000 copies have been sold to date and which is still enjoying new editions.

Life

Martha Mercader was trained as a teacher at the Escuela Normal Nacional Mary O. Graham in La Plata (graduated in 1944). She then completed a degree in English as a teacher in secondary schools at the Facultad de Humanidades of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata until 1948 and obtained a diploma for teaching English as a foreign language at the University of London in 1949/1950 . From 1948 to 1959 she taught English at various high schools. In 1953 she completed her training as an English translator at the Law Faculty of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata with the title "Traductora Pública Nacional" (sworn translator). She later translated around 20 books from English and several from French for various publishers. She also worked as a journalist for newspapers, magazines, radio and television. From 1963 to 1966 she held the office of Directora de Cultura de la Provincia de Buenos Aires. From 1984 to 1989 she was head of the Colegio Mayor Argentino "Nuestra Señora de Luján" high school in Madrid , which is subordinate to the Argentine Ministry of Education. From 1993 to 1997 she was a member of the Cámara de Diputados de la Nación for the Unión Cívica Radical party .
