history

At the end of the 19th century, the municipality of Amsterdam proposed to include parks and green spaces in the city's new expansion plans ( Dutch Uitbreidungsplan ; later: Algemeen Uitbreidungsplan , AUP for short ). The Dutch architect HP Berlage (1856–1934), who was commissioned to do this, included this proposal in his Plan Zuid (German Plan Süd ). At the end of the 1920s and the beginning of the 1930s, the municipality had the park created by the unemployed as part of a job creation measure (Dutch work supply project ).

The park was officially completed and opened in 1936. In 1949 the park was named "Amstelpark". In 1968 the park was named after the American civil rights activist Martin Luther King (1929–1968). The other park, also in Amsterdam South, which was then called Park Zuid and where the Floriade garden and agricultural exhibition took place, was then named Amstelpark .

The De Parade theater festival (also known as Parade for short ) has been held annually in Martin Luther Kingpark since 1990, with around 48 music, dance, theater and around 13 children's performances.

In the first two days of 2012, 17,000 visitors came to the parade in Martin Luther Kingpark .

The traveling theater also gives performances in Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht.
