Martin Bursík (born August 12, 1959 in Prague , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech politician . From 2005 to 2009 he was chairman of the Green Party ( Strana zelených ) and from January 2007 to May 2009 he was environment minister and in November / December 2007 he was acting minister of education.

Life

In the 1970s, Bursík studied environmental engineering at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Charles University in Prague . In June 1989 he joined the dissident movement and signed the Hnutí za občanskou svobodu movement . During the Velvet Revolution in November of the same year, he was one of the founders of the Citizens Forum and later the Občanské hnutí movement .

It was in 1998 for 2 months Environment Minister in the cabinet of Josef Tošovský . Then he ran unsuccessfully for the Lord Mayor of Prague and joined the KDU-ČSL . He left this party in 2003. In June 2004 he became a member of the Greens and was elected party leader. After the parliamentary elections in 2006, he became a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament and on January 9, 2007, he was appointed to the second cabinet of Mirek Topolánek .

After the Green Party had only achieved 2.1% in the European elections in June 2009, he resigned from the office of chairman on June 8, 2009 and announced that he would not run in the parliamentary elections in autumn 2009 either. His successor as chairman was Ondřej Liška .

In August 2013 he founded the green-liberal party Liberálně ekologická strana (LES).

For the Senate election in the Czech Republic in 2014 , he ran in Prague 1 on the list of the TOP 09 party and landed in third place.

In July 2019, the Prague magistrate appointed him special representative for sustainable energy policy and climate.
