Martin Damian (born September 21, 1973 in Olomouc ) is a Czech icon painter .

biography

In 2000 he entered the Capuchin Order , where he learned the art of icon painting during his six-year stay . Of particular importance in his training as an icon writer was the exchange of experiences with Orthodox masters, where he got to know the production of icons using the original technique of Byzantine art .

Between 2002 and 2005 he studied theology and spirituality at the Palacký University in Olomouc .

He has been writing icons since 2003 (the icon is an image that, from the theological point of view, is not painted or drawn, but written), and he made the first icons for his confreres in the Capuchin monastery . He worked in monasteries in Prague , Ujezd, Olomouc and Brno . In 2006 he decided not to take the perpetual religious vows and left the religious community .

In 2009 he founded an icon workshop in Prague.

Exhibitions

  • In 2012 he organized a Pentecost exhibition of his icons in the Hütteldorfer parish church in Vienna . During the exhibition he presented icon painting live.
  • In cooperation with the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, he organized an exhibition in 2011 called Icons in Olomouc .
  • In 2011 he exhibited his works under the name Light of Icons in Prague's Loreto , in the Benedictine Abbey of Rajhrad and in the City Museum in Kadaň .
  • In 2009 he took part in a master class organized by the National Gallery in Prague , which ended with a joint exhibition in the rooms of the St. George Monastery in Prague Castle .

Works

  • Cross of San Damiano ; At the beginning of the 13th century, Christ spoke to St. Francis of Assisi through this cross. Until the 20th century, the San Damiano Cross was hidden in the monastery of the Order of the Poor Clares. To this day, the cross of San Damiano is very popular with the successors of Francis of Assisi and Saint Clare of Assisi .

According to legend, Francis of Assisi was stigmatized by a seraph. That is why the saint's nickname is "Seraphicus". The orders of the Franciscans and Poor Clares , whose origin goes back to him, are called seraphic orders.
