The Prague Loreto (Czech Pražská Loreta ) is a baroque building complex on the Hradschin in Prague . The Capuchin monastery consists of the Church of the Nativity , the Loretto Chapel and a representative convent building with a bell tower.

history

After the victory of the Catholic League at the Battle of White Mountain in 1621, an extensive recatholization process led to the establishment of Loreto pilgrimage sites throughout Bohemia . This was thought to be one of the means to regain the interest of the Bohemian population in the Catholic religion.

The rather small Prague Loreto Chapel , which is a replica of the Casa santa in the Italian municipality of Loreto in the province of Ancona , stands in the inner courtyard of the building complex with a large nave, bell tower and side wings. The construction of the Casa Santa, which began in 1626, was financed by Benigna Katharina von Lobkowicz and completed in 1631 by the commissioned Italian builder Giovanni Batista Orsi . In the 18th century the courtyard was equipped with two fountains created by the Prague sculptor JM Brüderle.

The construction of the Prague Loreto lasted from 1626 to 1750. In 1721 the baroque front was built by Christoph and Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer . The organ in the Loreto Church was made by Leopold Spiegel . The author of the sculptural jewelry is H. Kohl. The carillon, made in 1694 in Amsterdam and consisting of 30 bells, is housed in the early baroque tower. The clockmaker of the complicated mechanism, which sounds the hourly Marian song "Tisíckráte pozdravujem tebe, o Matičko Krista Ježíše - we want to greet you a thousand times, you, O purest mother of Jesus Christ", was Peter Neumann from Prague.

The treasury with jewels, with paintings of great art historical value and above all with the numerous monstrances is a valuable part of the Loreto sanctuary in Prague. The Prague Sun is world famous , a monstrance made in Vienna in 1699, made of gold-plated silver and adorned with 6,222 diamonds . It is 89.5 cm high, 70 cm wide and weighs 12 kg.
