Martin Fruwein (also Martin Fruewein , Fruvein , from 1619 Frühwein von Podoli ; * in Schmiedeberg , Hereditary Principality of Schweidnitz-Jauer ; † June 7, 1621 in Prague ) was one of the most active participants in the Bohemian uprising of 1618.

Life

Martin Fruwein came from the Silesian Schmiedeberg in the then Bohemian hereditary principality Schweidnitz-Jauer. In 1597 he moved to the old town of Prague , where he worked as a lawyer. In 1615 his brother Benjamin moved in with him, also a lawyer. Both made considerable fortunes.

Martin became a member of the Brothers Unity , where he held an important position. For a while he also worked for Peter Wok von Rosenberg . In 1609 he was elected Defensor , in 1611 a member of the board of directors of the Estates government and a member of the commission investigating the attack on Bohemia by the Passau residents.

His anti-Habsburg attitude led him to actively participate in the preparation of the class uprising in 1618. He was together with Albrecht Jan Smiřický von Smiřice , Heinrich Matthias von Thurn , Václav Budovec z Budova , Ulrich Kinsky von Wchinitz ( Oldřich Vchynský ze Vchynic ), Leonhard Colonna von Fels and Wenzel Wilhelm von Ruppa ( Václav Vilém z Roupova ) one of the main conspirators and at the same time the only representative of the bourgeoisie at the secret assembly on May 22, 1618. In this secret meeting, it was agreed that the governors Wilhelm Slavata and Jaroslav Borsita Count von Martinic would be on the following day to be eliminated by defenestration .

After the uprising, Fruwein was elected director of the city, a year later King Friedrich of the Palatinate appointed him court judge of the royal cities and at the same time elevated him to the knighthood with the predicate "von Podoli" ( z Podolí ).

After the battle of the White Mountain , Fruwein was robbed and tortured by the soldiers , after which he was thrown into prison and interrogated. He was sentenced to death but took his own life prior to execution .
