Martin Karl Wilhelm Höher (born October 6, 1957 in Cologne ) is a German cardiologist and university professor .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1976, Höher studied medicine at the University of Cologne , passed the state examination in 1983 and received his license to practice medicine . In 1987 he was at the University of Cologne with a dissertation "Influence of sympathetic stimulation and size of the ischemic area on ischämiebedingte changes in contractility and early arrhythmias in pigs' hearts" doctorate . In 1991 he was recognized as a specialist in internal medicine , in 1993 for cardiology and in 2001 for special internal intensive medicine . In 2001, Höher received his habilitation with the thesis Beat-to-Beat Variability of Micropotentials in the High-Resolution Electrocardiogram . In 2007 he was appointed adjunct professor at Ulm University. In 2012 he received the MBA Health Care Management from the University of Bayreuth with his master's thesis "Clinical cooperation through branch formation of special units - Strategic and economic analysis of the branch cardiac catheter laboratory of the Bayreuth GmbH Clinic in the Fichtelgebirge Clinic". Höher lectures at the University of Ulm and at the campus academy of the University of Bayreuth. 1992–2003 Höher worked as a senior physician in the Department of Internal Medicine II at Ulm University . 2004–2015 Höher was chief physician at the Medical Clinic II (cardiology-angiology-pulmonology-internal intensive care medicine) at the Bayreuth Clinic .

At the end of 2014, pulmonology was converted into an independent department and Höher was released from the management of the intensive care unit at the Bayreuth Clinic with immediate effect. He was accused in the press of the duration of ventilation in the internal intensive care unit and the introduction of minimally invasive aortic valve replacement (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation = TAVI ) in the hospital.

After the allegations were completely cleared up by an investigative commission, Höher was reinstated as head of the internal intensive care unit in March 2015. The specialist theoretical discussion of the chief physicians about TAVI was also clarified and the resulting allegations of minimally invasive aortic valve replacement were completely dispelled during 2015. The report on which the allegations are based is said to have shown considerable quality deficiencies, for example the population and social structure in Bayreuth and Marktredwitz was not taken into account. There was therefore an undersupply of TAVI rather than an oversupply.

In Germany, TAVI has now become the standard procedure for treating aortic stenosis in older patients and has been used more frequently since 2014 than surgical replacement of the aortic valve. Höher's treatment standards corresponded to the TAVI guidelines implemented by the German Cardiac Society (DGK) in 2016.

Up to the time of the clarification, however, there had been very one-sided reports, especially in the local press, so that instead of resuming activity, Höher and the Bayreuth Clinic separated by mutual agreement at the end of 2015.

Since 2015, the Bayreuth Clinic has been trying to counter the previous negative reports in the local media with a new "trust offensive". For this purpose, a main actor in the previous reporting, the former Bayreuth local journalist Frank Schmälzle, was appointed to a newly created position for public relations.

Höher has been head of internal medicine and cardiology at Kassel Elisabeth Hospital since September 2016.

Höher has been married since 1988 and has four children.
