Martin Kakies

Martin Kakies (born May 7, 1894 in Schwarzort , Kurische Nehrung , † January 17, 1987 in Hamburg ) was a German teacher and journalist .

Life

Kakies (the name is emphasized on the second syllable) initially worked as a teacher before he became editor of the liberal daily Memeler Dampfboot , which is published in Memel ( Lithuanian Klaipėda ) . In 1927 Kakies succeeded Robert Leubner as editor-in-chief of this newspaper, and he also worked as a book author and photographer. With a moderately German-friendly course, the paper managed to increase the circulation to 17,000 copies during this period under Lithuanian sovereignty by the mid-1930s. After the expulsion from Memelland , Kakies was editor-in-chief of the Ostpreußenblatt, founded in Hamburg in 1950 .
