from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Martin Landsberg (* around 1455 ; † before July 14, 1523 ) was a German book printer in Leipzig .

Live and act

Martin Landsberg came from Würzburg or its surroundings ( Martinus Herbipolensis ). In 1472 he was enrolled at the University of Leipzig and in 1475 acquired the degree of bachelor's degree . He married a bourgeois daughter and opened a print shop in the city in 1486 or 1490. (It is uncertain whether Landsberg was Capotius' anonymous printer , who printed in Leipzig between 1486 and 1490 without a name). On December 30, 1490, Martin Landsberg received the citizenship of the city of Leipzig. The print shop was on Ritterstrasse near the university. Landsberg, like other book printers, ran an inn in his house.

He died before July 14, 1523.

Create

Along with Konrad Kachelofen and Melchior Lotter the Elder, Martin Landsberg is considered the most important Leipzig printer of his time. About 900 prints were made in his office. A focus was on classical authors (44% of printer types) and polemics for and against the Reformation since 1518 (34%). In addition, Landsberg published works by contemporary humanistic authors and, as a specialty, more mathematical works than all other printers in the city put together. The main buyer of the publications was the university.
