Martin Maier (theologian)

Martin Maier SJ (* 1960 in Meßkirch ) is a German Jesuit , theologian and publicist .

Life

Maier joined the Jesuit order in 1979. From 1981 to 1992 he studied philosophy , theology and music in Munich, Paris, Innsbruck and San Salvador. In 1988 he was ordained a priest. From 1989 to 1991 he was pastor in a rural community in El Salvador . In 1993 he was with a thesis on liberation theology of his religious brothers Ignacio Ellacuría and Jon Sobrino as doctor of theology doctorate . Maier was visiting lecturer at the Jesuit universities Universidad Centroamericana “José Simeón Cañas” in San Salvador and Center Sèvres in Paris . From 2009 to 2014 he was rector of the Berchmanskolleg. Since 2014 he has worked at the Jesuit European Social Center in Brussels.

Journalistic activity

Martin Maier was a member of the editorial team (since 1998 also editor-in-chief) of Voices of the Time from 1995 to 2009 . In addition, he published articles and a. in the online portal of the Swiss Jesuit Province and wrote devotional texts for the program Thoughts on the day in the program of Bavaria 2 .

Maier works as a journalist on environmental issues and was present at the World Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002 . A personal concern of his is the memory of the Archbishop of San Salvador, Óscar Romero , who was shot in 1980 , and the Jesuits around Ignacio Ellacuría who were murdered in 1989 during the Salvadoran civil war . After the massacre of his friars and their two domestic workers, Maier had taken over the parish of one of the priests who had been killed. He has written numerous articles on what happened.
