[Association of Swiss Doctors] He is also a researcher in the field of neonatal and fetal surgery as well as in the field of so-called tissue engineering (growing skin in the laboratory). Since 2003 he has headed the pediatric surgery clinic at the University Children's Hospital in Zurich and has played a key role in making it the leading center for pediatric surgery in Europe.

After completing his medical degree in Zurich in 1981, he completed basic training in anesthesia , general surgery and urology (1982–1986). Between 1987 and 1992 further training as a specialist in pediatric surgery at the University Children's Hospital in Zurich. 1993–1995 Research Fellow at what was then the world's only center for fetal surgery, the Fetal Treatment Center University of California , San Francisco Medical Center. Meuli dedicates a significant part of his research to the topic of fetal surgery for spina bifida (myelomeningocele). Numerous pioneering publications in the field have resulted in the clinical introduction of fetal surgery for spina bifida in human patients. In 2010 he carried out a fetal operation for spina bifida (open back) in Switzerland for the first time. Since then, Meuli has successfully carried out more than 30 of these very rare operations and has thus established himself internationally as one of the top surgeons in this field.

In the field of burn and plastic surgery, Meuli developed the vision 20 years ago of growing the patient's own skin in the laboratory for the treatment of burns and other skin problems. Under his leadership, a team of basic scientists achieved this breakthrough. The first patients are currently being treated with this novel method.

Meuli has published over 120 scientific papers.
