Martin Schäfer (Mayor)

Martin Schäfer (* 1965 ) is a German local politician. Since 2014 he has been the first mayor of the Upper Bavarian community of Gröbenzell as a representative of an independent voter community .

Schäfer has lived in Groebenzell since 1971. He completed secondary school and then completed an apprenticeship as a forest manager . He was employed by the State Forestry Office in Munich. In 1987 he bought a laundry in the Munich district of Schwabing . He expanded their offer to include a rental service for dirt control mats. After selling the business, he built a new, successful production facility and laundry facility for dirt trapping, design, logo and advertising mats made of nylon, cotton or coconut in Groebenzell. A special business model is the nationwide exchange service of soiled mats for cleaned ones directly at the customer's premises.

In the 2008 local elections , Schäfer, who had not been politically active before, ran for the UWG constituency and was elected as the only member of the community council of Gröbenzell. In this role he initiated the annual family festival at the town hall. In the 2014 local elections , he made it into the runoff election for the mayor's office, in which he surprisingly beat a CSU candidate on March 30, 2014 with 61.9%. His term of office began on May 1, 2014. During his tenure, the community of Gröbenzell approached the mark of 20,000 inhabitants. At the end of 2018 the population was 19,967.

As of March 31, 2019, the Fürstenfeldbruck district office announced the number of residents at 20,048, which increased the number of councilors for the 2020 local elections to 30.

In a runoff election against Anton Kammerl ( CSU ), Martin Schäfer reapplied for the post of Mayor of Gröbenzell on March 29, 2020. Due to the corona pandemic , this runoff election, like all others across Bavaria, took place for the first time exclusively as a postal vote . Martin Schäfer again secured the mayor's office with a majority of 53.82 percent.
