Martin Schmidt (born July 4, 1969 in Berlin ) is a German judoka .

biography

Martin Schmidt has two sisters and two brothers. During his school days he tried out various sports offered at school. In 1977 his sister registered him in judo with the ASG Wilhelmshagen . There his talent was shown, so that in 1979 he moved to the Rotation training center in Berlin-Mitte . In 1984 he was delegated to the children's and youth sports school and brought up to the top level by the trainer Jochen Bech . In the junior division under the leadership of his trainer Detlef Ultsch , Schmidt was able to record his first successes. In 1988 he won his first victory at the senior GDR championships up to 60 kg. After two 5th places in the Junior European Championships, he won the European Junior Championship title up to 65 kg in 1989.

His international breakthrough in the senior sector came in 1991 when he won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Prague up to 65 kg. In 1992 he won the German championship up to 71 kg, and the A tournament in Budapest. Nevertheless, he was still denied participation in the Olympic Games. In the same year he won the European Cup in Paris with the SC Berlin team . Under the coaching team Jochen Bech / Detlef Ultsch and the national coach Dietmar Hötger , he matured into a top Judoka. In November 1994 he was the first non-Asian judoka up to 71 kg to win the Kano Cup in Japan . In 1995 he won the European Championships in Birmingham and has since been considered one of the world's best uchi-mata throwers and ground fighters. In spring 1996 he tore his knee ligament. Despite this handicap, he reached 7th place at the Olympic Games in Atlanta .

After the operation, it took him almost two years to regain the top spot in the world. With the repeated win of the World Masters 1999 in Munich , further tournament successes and the nomination for the Olympic Games 2000 in Sydney , he confirmed his top position up to 71 kg. He won a total of 7 world cup tournaments, making him a leader in German judo.

As "Mister Bundesliga" (for years without defeat in the 1st BL) he won the German team championship twice with the JC 90 Frankfurt (Oder) and has been fighting unbeaten for JC Eberswalde in the 2nd Bundesliga since 2003.

Martin Schmidt works in the field of sports. He heads the sports branch of Dresdner Bank AG in the East Region, looks after company sports groups, organizes events and areas of company health promotion.
