from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Martin Schwab (born Martin Maltan ; born March 18, 1926 in Schönau am Königssee ; † November 17, 2012 in Ramsau near Berchtesgaden ), known as Gerstreit Martin , was a German folk musician .

Act

Martin Schwab began to learn three instruments by ear in his childhood - the guitar at the age of four , the accordion at the age of eight and the dulcimer at thirteen . As a 17-year-old apprentice painter, Schwab had to go to war in Russia and France in 1943, where he lost his left thigh. The first group in which he participated were the "Schönauer Buam", which he co-founded in 1946 and from which the "Schönauer Musikanten" later emerged. In 1968 he founded the “Gerstreit-Musi” together with Hias Häusler. With both groups, Schwab became known throughout the German-speaking Alpine region, not least his “revolutionary combination” of the chopping board with a diatonicZiach ”.

Schwab composed over 150 pieces of music. Since he could not read or write notes until the end, some of his compositions were put into notes by the Bavarian National Association for Homeland Care . In 2009 he tried to pass on his musical knowledge and skills to younger people.

The name of the tavern “Gerstreit”, which was built in 1953 for the first time and again in 1972 on the same site, is “mainly connected to the name of the well-known folk musician Gerstreit-Martin”. Expanded again in 1992 and 1998, it is located in Ramsau near Berchtesgaden and is now run by his children. In the season from Easter to the end of November, folk music groups play here every Sunday and public holiday.

Martin Schwab was married twice and had five children from his first marriage and a son from his second marriage. He died in November 2012 after a long illness at the Gerstreit mountain inn.

His grave is in the mountain cemetery in Schönau am Königssee .

Awards

In 1984 Schwab received the Federal Republic of Germany's Medal of Merit for his achievements in folk music . In 2009 he was awarded the district medal in gold of the district of Berchtesgadener Land . He was also honored with the Golden Order of Merit of the Bavarian Radio and the Kiem Pauli Order.
