Martin Stevens

Martin Peter Stevens (born February 1, 1929 in Eschweiler ; † November 13, 2015 there ) was a German swimming champion and politician ( SPD ). He was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia from May 30, 1985 to May 31, 1995 .

Life

Despite a successful apprenticeship as a model maker, Martin Stevens was drawn to swimming. He completed an apprenticeship as a swimming master and was active in club sports in his hometown at an early age.

His political career began at the same time. At first he was politically active in his hometown Weisweiler (now part of Eschweiler) until the municipal reorganization in 1972 . He had been a member of the Aachen district council since April 23, 1972. Between 1991 and 1998 he was parliamentary group leader of the SPD district parliamentary group. He worked for the Rhineland Regional Council from 1975 to 1995. In 1985 he was still elected as a direct candidate for the constituency of Aachen (southern district). In 1990 he was able to repeat this success. The focus of his work was on the country's petitions committee . In 1995 he decided not to run again for reasons of age.

For his voluntary work, Martin Stevens was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit in 1996 by the former state parliament president Ulrich Schmidt . He also received the Kurt Koblitz Medal from the SPD in the Aachen district.

After retiring from active politics, Martin Stevens returned to swimming. The swimming district Aachen e. V. elected Martin Stevens as honorary chairman for his active participation in club sports.
