The Schunk (own notation: SCHUNK ) is a company for gripping and clamping technology with headquarters in Lauffen .

history

After the end of the Second World War , Friedrich Schunk (1912–1998) founded the company in Lauffen am Neckar in 1945. The first major orders from the mechanical workshop included the production of brake drums and flywheels for the NSU Prinz 4 as well as precision parts for the Porsche 356 .

In 1964, Heinz-Dieter Schunk, Friedrich Schunk's son, joined the company.

In 1989, Schunk established its first foreign branches - so-called Intecs - in Belgium and Switzerland . In 1992, Intec USA followed in Raleigh , which was also expanded into a production site. In 2006, Schunk started production in Hangzhou, China . After the German quality standards could not be achieved there, Schunk closed this plant in 2009. The Shanghai branch was then expanded as a sales location.

Today Schunk produces at nine locations in Lauffen am Neckar, Brackenheim-Hausen , Mengen , St. Georgen , Huglfing as well as in Raleigh-Morrisville (USA), Aadorf (Switzerland) and Caravaggio (Italy). The company has 33 subsidiaries abroad.

The company, which has over 3,500 employees, is now run by the siblings Henrik A. Schunk and Kristina I. Schunk in the third generation.

Clamping technology

Schunk has been manufacturing and selling standardized clamping jaws for lathe chucks since 1966 . In 1978 hydraulic expansion technology, a process for high-precision clamping of shank tools, was added as a second product area. With Tandem, a system for universal and precise workpiece clamping, Schunk started the stationary clamping systems product range in 1988. In 1994 Schunk took over Hage GmbH in large quantities and expanded to include lathe chucks for lathes .

With the takeover of the Italian company MAG Systems, Schunk expanded the stationary clamping systems product area to include magnetic clamping technology. Schunk further expanded this competence through a stake in the Italian magnet technology specialist SPD in 2008. In 2014 the SPDSpa was fully integrated into the Schunk group of companies.

In 2010 the Mengen site was expanded from a lathe chuck factory to a competence center for workpiece clamping. In 2014 Schunk took over Gressel AG, a Swiss company for mechanical clamping systems.

Gripping systems

When industrial robots became established at the beginning of the 1980s , the company brought its first standardized robot gripper onto the market in 1982, thus laying the foundation for today's automation division. In the years that followed, Schunk expanded its gripping technology to include the functions of turning, linear movement and quick-change systems for automation components.

With the inclusion of amtec robotics GmbH in the group of companies in 2003, Schunk expanded the automation division to include mechatronic drive components, thus laying the foundation for modular robotics . Schunk acquired the reputation of being one of the driving forces behind applied service robotics, in particular through the annual organization of ExpertDays Service Robotics . In 2006, GEMOTEC Montagetechnik GmbH from Huglfing was integrated into the company and the modular assembly technology product area was established.

In 2016, Schunk presented the Co-act JL1 gripper, a technology platform for grippers in human-robot collaboration.
