From 1997 to 1999 he worked as a research assistant in the Department of Gastroenterology and Infectious Diseases of the Benjamin Franklin University Hospital of the Free University of Berlin and in 1999 moved to the Clinic for General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery of the Charité Berlin, Campus Virchow Klinikum.

Stockmann has been chief physician at the clinic for general, visceral and vascular surgery at the Paul Gerhardt Stift Evangelical Hospital in Wittenberg since 2016 .

He is particularly interested in the development of the dynamic liver function test " LiMAx ", which reflects the maximum functional capacity of the liver and is used in clinical applications, especially for the preoperative planning of surgical interventions on the liver. In 2009 Stockmann completed his habilitation on the subject of "Value of a newly developed procedure for determining liver function in liver surgery (LiMAx test)".

Stockmann is the co-author of over 100 original scientific papers, has written several book chapters on the subject of “liver function measurement” and has been head of the “Workgroup for the Liver” at the Charité since 2009.
