The Johannesstift Diakonie , formerly Paul Gerhardt Diakonie CJSC is a healthcare company in Berlin , Brandenburg , Saxony-Anhalt , Hanover and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern . It is a common umbrella brand under which Paul Gerhardt Diakonie gAG and Evangelisches Johannesstift Berlin have been operating since June 11, 2019 .

Paul Gerhard Diakonie

The predecessor of Paul Gerhard Diakonie, the Association for the Establishment of Evangelical Hospitals (VzE), was founded in 1929 by representatives of the Evangelical Church in Berlin. Shortly afterwards, the construction of the Martin Luther Hospital in Berlin-Schmargendorf began. In 1931 the association took over a sanatorium on Spanische Allee in Berlin-Nikolassee , which was converted into the Hubertus Hospital. The Evangelical Forest Hospital Berlin-Spandau was built on the site of a former military hospital in Berlin-Falkenhagener Feld .

From the end of the 20th century until December 31, 2017, the organization ran Altmark-Klinikum gGmbH with the hospitals in Salzwedel and Gardelegen as part of management contracts . Paul Gerhardt Diakonie operates hospitals, nursing homes and old people's homes and is the largest denominational hospital operator in Berlin.

On July 1, 2009, the Association for the Establishment of Protestant Hospitals merged with the Paul Gerhardt Foundation, Lutherstadt Wittenberg (Saxony-Anhalt) to form the Paul Gerhardt Diakonie.

In the hospitals of the Paul Gerhardt Diakonie with around 1,800 beds, around 82,800 inpatient and 110,900 outpatient cases were treated. The care facilities provided a total of around 700 care places. The healthcare company employed around 9,000 people and had an annual turnover of around 384 million euros. It is named after the Protestant theologian Paul Gerhardt .

On January 1, 2018, Paul Gerhardt Diakonie eV merged with the Evangelisches Johannesstift to form the current Johannesstift Diakonie gAG , the umbrella brand that has been in effect since June 11, 2019.

In addition, Paul Gerhardt Diakonie trains in five nursing schools as well as a school for occupational therapy and a geriatric care school . The schools offer a total of 390 training positions. Furthermore, internal training courses are offered at three academies: in the Paul Gerhardt Diakonie Academy in Wittenberg, in the Johannesstift Academy in Berlin-Spandau and in the Evangelical Geriatric Center in Berlin-Wedding.
